OS Error Launching Game on Steam

This issue can present itself on any game on Steam, on both macOS and Windows.

Issue

Some customers have encountered an error from Steam when launching their game. The error number presented is usually 4294956486 or similar.

There are a number of possible solutions that can resolve this issue for your games on Steam, as this issue is not game specific.

(Windows) Reinstall OpenAL by running the "oalinst.exe" installer located in your game's install folder.
Ensure Steam is up to date
1. In Steam click ‘Steam’ in the top left corner.
2. Click “Check for Steam Client Updates…”
Verify the game files in Steam
1. Restart your computer and launch Steam.
2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select “Properties” from the menu.
3. Select the “Local Files” tab and click the “Verify integrity of game files…” button.
4. Steam will verify the game's files; this process may take several minutes.
Run the game manually, outside of Steam.
1. Try running the game directly from the file browser.
2. Try running the game directly from a command prompt.
Try disabling any antivirus programs that may be preventing the game from launching.
1. If this resolves the issue, you may need to add an exception to your antivirus program for the game.
Reinstall the game via Steam.
